Rosters - Coaches

Coach Kiefer is in his second stint as the Head Coach at Costa Mesa. Jim returned to Mesa in 2021 and guided the Mustangs to a 13-12 record in 2022. He is entering his 14th year as a Head Coach and 28th year overall at the high school level.

During his first stint (2006-2011), Coach Kiefer led the Mustangs to four consecutive CIF playoff appearances (2007-2010) and an Orange Coast League championship in 2009. Prior to his time at Mesa, he served as a Varsity Assistant at Brea-Olinda (1993-1995), as a Head Coach at Newport Harbor (1996-2001) and as a Varsity Assistant at Servite High School (2002-2003) and served as a Varsity Assistant Coach at El Dorado High School (2015-2021).

Before embarking on his coaching career, Jim pitched collegiately at Rio Hondo College (1990) and Fullerton College (1991).

Coach Kiefer has been a Physical Education and Math teacher at Costa Mesa over the past 18 years. He also served as Boys Athletic Director (2009-2014). He resides in Placentia with his wife, Heather, and two kids, Dane (20), and Halen (17).

Coach Richards in entering his second year as an Assistant Coach at Costa Mesa. Timmy serves as the Varsity Infield Coach. Prior to arriving at Mesa, he served as an Assistant Coach at Concordia University in Irvine (2019-2021).

After a successful high school playing career at Wilson High School in Long Beach, Timmy attended Cal State Fullerton and was a fixture as the shortstop for the Titans for four years (2014-2017). During his tenure at CSUF, his teams made two appearances in the College World Series (2015,2017). Coach Richards was drafted by three different major league organizations (Miami Marlins-2013, Minnesota Twins-2016, Washington Nationals-2017).

In addition to coaching, Coach Richards is a social studies teacher at Costa Mesa HS. He currently resides in Seal Beach.

Coach Christensen is entering his 5th year as an Assistant Coach at Costa Mesa (2008-2010, 2022-2023). Coach “C” serves as both the Varsity Hitting and Outfield Coach. John also served as Head JV Coach in 2007 and guided his team to an Orange Coast League JV championship. Prior to returning to Mesa, he was the Varsity Hitting and Outfield Coach at Newport Harbor HS (2014-2021). John coached several players in his time at Newport who went on to play at the collegiate level.

Coach Christensen resides in Newport Beach with his wife, Stacy, and sons, Noah (22), Troy (19), and Jack (17).

Omar is in his first year as the Mustangs Junior Varsity Head Coach. He is a 2019 graduate of CMHS. Omar was a three-time All-League selection (First Team-2017, 2019, Second Team-2018). He was instrumental in the 2019 team reaching the CIF Division 6 Final at 3rd Base and on the mound. Omar continued his baseball career at Westcliff University. He currently resides in Costa Mesa

Sam is in his first year as a Mustangs JV assistant coach. He graduated from CMHS in 2023. Sam was an All-League selection as a senior (Honorable Mention). He batted .341 with 26 RBI in 2023. Sam is currently attending Cal-State Fullerton and resides in Costa Mesa.
